A hot summer is in Pakistan especially, where West Indies tried to compete with Pakistan in the ODI series. This series was scheduled earlier, but due to various issues, both boards agreed to play this series in June 2022. As a result, only three one-day internationals were played between two nations. Pakistan outclassed West Indies in three matches of windies tour of Pakistan. It was a complicated series for West Indies since scorching heat was to be faced before facing a mighty Pakistani team with world-class batting and bowling line, including Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi. Here’s a quick review of the series alongside important milestones and integral factors regarding both teams.
First Match Knock
In three ODI series, the Windies started well in the first ODI, where they posted 300 plus scores with Shai Hope keeping the hopes of the West Indies team alive to get the most out of the series. Similarly, Brooks contributed well with Hope to continue building up the innings for their side. Haris Rauf started by taking four wickets. In the batting lineup, Imam-ul-Haq continued his streak of scoring consecutive fifties and, alongside Babar Azam, took their score to a good point from where the lower middle order took the team to the target. Babar scored another century and broke many records. A staggering run, oh man, the man the myth, incredible batting performance was displayed by the captain.
Khushdil Shah was the game-changer at the end, hitting 41 of just 23 balls. Babar Azam made three different records in this match. He became the first player to score three back-to-back centuries on two occasions. He completed the fastest 1000 runs as a captain and got the quickest 17 centuries in his ODI career. Babar Azam made three rare records in this match. He gave away the man of the partners (MOTM) award to Khushdil Shah for his blistering 41-run knock.
Second Match Knock
In the second ODI, Babar and Imam took their team to a decent total, with both batters scoring consecutive 50s. Yet again, Babar Azam broke another record of Javed Miandad’s consecutive eight fifties by scoring nine in ODI cricket. Pakistani team managed to score 275-8, whereas in response, the Windies started their innings well, but they didn’t know what Nawaz was up to. Nawaz quickly scattered the whole Windies batting order and completed his overs with a decorated total of 19-4 in 10 overs, becoming the second Pakistani spinner to do it after Muhammad Hafeez. Muhammad Nawaz got the man of the Match (MOTM) award for his contribution to his side, which ensured Pakistan sealed the series win by leading 2-0 with one match.
Third Match Knock
The last and third ODI between Pakistan and West Indies was played in Multan, and Pakistan’s batting lineup derailed Windies captain Pooran’s bowling spell, who was bowling for the first time in international cricket. Pakistan’s middle order was strewn when Babar Azam and Imam were in the dugout. Babar’s consecutive fifty’s streak was broken down, and Imam could not manage to convert his 50 into a match-winning 100 and got out on a flighted ball.
At one stage, the Pakistani team struggled to score 200 since the batting order collapsed in no time. The match was reduced to 48 over per side due to Sandstorm. Shadab contributed well-being of Pakistan’s vice-captain. He scored 86 runs on 78 balls when the team was in a challenging situation. Shadab took the reigns in his own hands and played brilliantly to take his side to 269-9, a defendable total at least. In response, the Windies’ top and middle order could not save the team from misery, and Shadab changed the scenario by taking four wickets in 10 overs.
Though Akeal Hossain showed some resistance, it was useless since no other batter could stand still with him. Pakistan comfortably secured the whitewash by getting Windies out on 216 in 37.4 overs. Shadab Khan, for his overall performance, got Man of the Match (MOTM) in the last match of the series. While Imam-ul-Haq got the award of Man of the Series for his continuous support to the team as a top-order batsman.
What Do Pakistanis Think About Windies Tour of Pakistan?
This series went well, but the Windies must work on their departments well. The batting lineup needs to chase targets while batting second with middle-order cooperation. Similarly, in Pakistan’s camp, the middle order was not successful at all. And fans criticized Rizwan alongside the inclusion of Haris. Everyone criticized him since his selection in ODI series based on PSL.
Hassan Ali was once again under the radar, with Fakhar Zaman hiding beneath the shadow of Imam and Babar’s supremacy. Overall, Pakistan’s performance was above average, with the team securing the fourth (4th) spot in the Men International ODI ranking. The Cricketing fans from Pakistan thanked West Indies for touring Pakistan and especially Multan for reviving the glory of the Multan International Stadium after ages.
